GLENN'S BACKGROUND:
Glenn is an Attorney At Law ("av" rated in Martindale-Hubbell) and
is one of the principal member-owners in the Law Firm of Alperstein,
Simon, Farkas, Gillin & Scott, LLP. Glenn is reputed throughout
California as a sucessful and competent lawyer. His reputation comes
from his numerous bar and legal professional committee memberships.
To name a few, Mr. Alperstein is a Member of the Section of Taxation
of the American Bar Association; Member of the Estate Counselor's Forum
of Century City; Member of the Jewish Community Foundation Committee
on Taxes & Legal Matters; Past President of the Estate Counselor's
Forum; Past President of the Hollywood Bar Association; Past President
of the Hollywood Estate Planning Council. Glenn was for many years (but
has of recent date of his own accord declined to remain a member) a
Certified Tax Specialist under the California State Bar Board of Legal
Specialization and a Member of the elite national estate planning and
retirement plan counsel, "The Group". Glenn Alperstein was
admitted to the California Bar in 1961; he is a graduate of UCLA (B.S.
Business Administration, 1957); and a graduate of Boalt Hall (U.C. Berkley,
1960).
GLENN'S QUALIFICATIONS: Glenn is a Member of the Section of Taxation of the American Bar Association; Member of Estate Counselor's Forum of Century City; Member of Jewish Community Foundation Committee on Taxes & Legal Matters; Past President of Estate Counselor's Forum; Past President of the Hollywood Bar Association; Past President of the Hollywood Estate Planning Council. Glenn was for many years (but has of recent date of his own accord declined to remain a member) a Certified Tax Specialist under the California State Bar Board of Legal Specialization and a Member of the elite national estate planning and retirement plan counsel, "The Group". Glenn is also a former instructor in Probate Administration in Probate Paralegal Program at University of West Los Angeles; he is a Licensed teacher in the Los Angeles Adult Education Program and former instructor (for over nine years) on the subjects of "Wills, Trusts and Estates" and "Legal Problems of the Family". Glenn is a frequent guest lecturer at tax institutes, including the California State Bar's Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) programs, estate planning councils, certified life underwriter meetings and other organizations; and author of numerous articles on estate, gift and generation skipping transfer planning, post mortem tax and trust matters and all interrelated tax aspects thereof, including income and estate tax planning for distributions from qualified and non-qualified retirement plans. JOEL M. SIMON JOEL'S BACKGROUND: Joel is an Attorney At Law ("av" rated in Martindale-Hubbell) and one of the principal member-owners in the Law Firm of Alperstein, Simon, Farkas, Gillin & Scott, LLP, 15760 Ventura Boulevard, Suite 1520, Encino, CA 91436-3026; Telephone No. (818) 501-3100; Fax No. (818) 461-0559; E-mail Address "jms@asgslaw.com". Prior to attending law school, Joel graduated from California State University At Northridge, obtaining his Master of Arts Degree in History. Joel taught American History, Political Science and Far Eastern History at Rio Hondo and Cerritos Colleges. While working as an instructor, Joel attended and graduated Cum Laude from Whittier College of Law in 1978, where he distinguished himself as a member of Law Review and was awarded the prestigious American Jurisprudence Award in Commercial Transactions and Constitutional Law. Joel was admitted to the California Bar in 1978. Joel has served as an Adjunct Instructor at Whittier College of Law, teaching Legal Research and Writing. Joel is married to Sylvia for more than 23 years. His primary outside interests include community service, hiking and every aspect of computers (including assuming full responsibility for every aspect of the computerization of the Firm). Joel is a Director of the Encino Chamber of Commerce and serves as an officer of the United Chambers of Commerce, including serving in the positions of Assistant Secretary and Chairman of its Governmental Affairs Committee. JOEL'S QUALIFICATIONS: Joel is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Professional Responsibility and Ethics Committee, serving as Chairman of the Committee in 1993-94. He is also an actively participating Judge Pro Tem assigned on a "pro bono" basis to sit for both the Municipal Court and Superior Court hearing civil matters, unlawful detainer, small claims and appeals. Joel also acts as an arbitrator for the Los Angeles County Bar Association Dispute Resolution Services, hearing fee arbitration disputes and since 2003, served as Vice Chair of the Attorney-Client Arbitration and Mediation Services Executive Committee. He is a member of Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association and is a former Trustee of the Hollywood Bar Association. Joel is a certified mediator, on the panel of probate mediators and has developed negotiation skills to utilize the mediation process to produce effective, economical results for the firm's clients. Joel is a Director and will serve as President of the Encino Chamber of Commerce in 2006 and has been a member of the Chamber since 1996. Joel has been a Director and Member of the Executive Committee of the Economic Alliance since 2003. He is also a Director and Chairman of the United Chambers of Commerce 2005-2006. Joel is General Counsel, pro bono, for Para Los Ninos since 1980 and he has been actively participating as Judge Pro Tem for twenty years and has been assigned on a "pro bono" basis to sit in Superior Court hearing civil matters, unlawful detainer, small claims and appeals. Joel's extensive background in both the transactional
and litigation process gives him a highly practical approach to the
law with the ability to provide advice and counsel in transactional
matters based upon his court room, mediation, arbitration and experience
as a litigator. SCOTT FARKAS SCOTT'S BACKGROUND: Scott is an Attorney at Law and a Partner in the Law Firm of Alperstein, Simon, Farkas, Gillin & Scott LLP, 15760 Ventura Boulevard, Suite 1520, Encino, California 91436-3026; Telephone No. (818) 501-3100; Fax No. (818) 461-0559. Scott was admitted to the California Bar in 1998; he is a graduate of University of Southern California (B.A., Sociology, 1994), Loyola Law School of Los Angeles (J.D., 1998) and University of Southern California (Master of Business Taxation, 1999). Before joining the firm in June 2001, Scott first served as a law clerk with the firm during the summers of 1996 and 1997. Thereafter, Scott worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, from 1999 to June 2001, in the Technology and Entertainment practice. His responsibilities included tax consulting for corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and individuals. Scott is married to Carin. Scott's outside interest include travel, soccer, golf, tennis, movies and USC Football. SCOTT'S QUALIFICATIONS: In
1999, Scott received his Master of Business Taxation degree with an
emphasis in estate planning and individual tax issues. Scott's area
of practice with the firm will primarily be in personal and business
tax matters, estate planning, trusts, conservatorships and related matters.
Scott is a member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County
Bar Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association and Sports Lawyer
Association. He participates in section memberships within each organization
in tax, trusts and probate. WHITNEY M. SCHWARTZ WHITNEY'S BACKGROUND: Whitney was admitted to the California Bar in 2005. She is a graduate of University of California, San Diego (B.A., Human Development, cum laude) and University of California, Los Angeles School of Law (J.D., 2005). Additionally, she is currently pursuing a Masters of Taxation at Loyola Law School. Prior to joining the firm in July 2007, Whitney practiced in the fields of estate planning, post-mortem administrations, and small business formation and maintenance. Outside of the firm, Whitney's interests include travel
and golf. WHITNEY'S QUALIFICATIONS: Whitney is a member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association, and the Ventura County Bar Association. Her areas of practice include estate planning, trust administrations, probate, conservatorships, and related matters.
Mr. Scott ("av" rated in Martindale-Hubbel) graduated from the University of Chicago in 1942 and obtained his law degree in 1947 from its School of Law, where he served on the Law Review. Mr. Scott was a founding member of our predecessor firm and practiced closely on associations with Glenn and was mentor to Joel since 1964 and 1978 respectively. He was a member of the American Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He has served as a Trustee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and is a former President of the Hollywood Bar Association. During his twenty years of service as a member of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California he served as a member of its Executive Committee, as Vice Chairman of its Legal and Claims Committee and as a member of its Water Problem Committee. Mr. Scott's areas of specialization (prior to his retirement in 1995) included administrative law matters, structuring major business and real estate transactions, handling complex business and marital dissolution litigations. In his practice, he has also represented major American and International companies.
One of the firms two founding partners, Nathan E. Gillin died in 1996. Although greatly missed, his legal career (from 1932 through his retirement in the late 1980's) encompassed complex real estate transactions, including the formation of real estate syndicates, giving a broad range of advice to business clients, coordinating with the other members of the firm in connection with income, estate and gift tax problems involving real estate transactions, has been of immense benefit to the firm and its remaining members. On October 22, 1996 Nathan E. Gillin, passed away. He will be missed by all of us, but the quality and expertise that he instilled in this firm will always continue.
